International Cities of Peace™ is a growing network of individual peacemakers and cities of peace. Here is a brief synopsis of news from its multi-year development.
• February, 2009, Cities of Peace, Inc. was incorporated by Executive Director J. Frederick Arment, Mediation consultant Marguerite Carver, and former peace officer and Director of the Missing Peace Art Space, Steve Fryburg.
• International Cities of Peace is a trademark of Cities of Peace, Inc.
• Spring, 2009: the first scholarly paper on Cities of Peace, written by Professor Peter vonden Dungen of Bradford, England, is published in German.
• May, 2009: Board member Steve Fryburg joins the organization as Director of International Programs.
• September, 2009: The International Cities of Peace organization gets a new logo and identity from Brainstorm Branding!
• November, 2009: An Advisory group forms to establish as criteria for becoming a associated City of Peace.
• December, 2009, Cities of Peace, Incorporated becomes a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization -- donations appreciated! Our expenses are low, but our impact is proving to be global.
• Peter vonden Dungen of Bradford, England, General Coordinator of the International Network of Museums for Peace, joins the Advisory Committees.
• John Naugle of Atlanta, City of Peace, joins the Advisory Committee of leaders of Cities of Peace.
• David Hazen of Eugene, Oregon, City of Peace joins the Advisory Committee.
• David Hazen creates a Yahoo group for the Advisory Committee to discuss and share ideas and resources.
• Dr. Carol Rank of Coventry: City of Peace and Reconciliation joins the Advisory Committee.
• Official Launch of the International Cities of Peace organization, Feb. 5, 2010 at the Missing Peace Art Space.
• Due to snow, an Alternative Launch for February 12 was also well attended.
• Bishnu Hari Tripathi, of Nepal, joined the Advisory Council of Leaders of Cities of Peace.
• Mark Willis, Community Relations Manager at the Dayton Metro Library, became Liaison for Nepal.
• Atlanta City of Peace started a Global Peace Museum website on February 14, 2010.
• February 17, 2010, Dr. Kazuyo Yamane of Kochi University, Japan, author of many peace books, joined the Advisory Council.
• February 23, 2010, Dr. Hend Farouh of Giza, Egypt, an environmental researcher and lecturer on peace, joined our Advisory Council.
• March 2, 2010, Samuel Okogbue of Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria, joined as Regional Liaison.
• March 23, 2010, Dr. Kurvey of Nagpur, India, joined the Council. He is President of the India Institute for Peace, Disarmament & Environmental Protection; Honorary Executive Director of the "No More Hiroshima: No More Nagasaki: Peace Exhibition"; an Ecutive Committee Member of the International Network of Scientists and Engineers for Global Responsibility (INES) and on the Board of the International Network of Museums for Peace.
• Mitra Sen of Toronto, Canada, joined the
Advisory Council. She is the founder of the
international Peace Tree Day, celebrated on June 1 annually.
• Dr. Patrick Hiller, Hood River, Oregon: City of Peace, joined our Advisory Council of Leaders. He holds a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from Nova Southeastern University.
• News from a potential city of peace organization in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
• Contacted by a city of peace organization in Kent, Ohio.
• 2010, publication of the "Oxford Encyclopedia of Peace: Four Volume Set, edited by Nigel Young with articles by ICP Advisor Peter vanden Dungen.
• Mr. Etienne Maemble of Yaoundé, Cameroon became a Liaison for ICP. She is a national rep for Servas international.
• Unity Village Mayor Doug Rusher and the Unity Village Trustees unanimously pass a Resolution to become an official International City of Peace.
• Contacted by a city of peace organization in Ottawa, Canada
• Contacted by a city of peace organization in Akron, Ohio.
• On September 21, 2010, International Day of Peace, Dayton, Ohio became an official City of Peace by Mayor's witness of Proclamation.
• October, 2010, identified a decree by the Mayor and Council of Buenos Aires, Argentina to be "a city committed to peace."
• Connected Ted Lollis, the world's authority on peace monuments, as a consultant to a Kent State peace studies class.
• End of one year progress celebrated with nine countries and many U.S. organizations participating.
• Katherine Li of the Center for Global Nonkilling joins the Advisory Council.
• Feb. 15, 2011; Welcome to new Cities of Peace, Inc. Board Members Gabriela Pickett, a founder of the Unitarian Foundation for World Peace and curator of the Missing Peace Art Space, as well as Jule Rastikis, Chair of the Salem Avenue Peace Corridor initiative with extensive business and community-based expertise.
• Welcome Worakate Thangsurbku (Ping Ping), Pathumthani, Thailand: City of Peace to our Advisory Council.
• Welcome Paula Zayco Aberasturi of Mataki, Philippines: City of Peace to our Advisory Council.
• Dayton's Salem Avenue Peace Corridor is established and the Summer of Sound series held with jazz, blues, and reggae
• The Shift Network and International Cities of Peace is collaborating on the global Summer of Peace, 2012
• Welcome Lake County, California: Region of Peace with Taira St. John joining our Advisory Council
• Welcome Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico: City of Peace with Adrian Villasenor-Glarz joining our Advisory Council
• Welcome Etienné Francis Maemble, Yaounde, Cameroon: City of Peace for joining our Advisory Council
• Welcome Bishop Mabwe Lucien, Fizi, D.R. Congo for joining our Advisory Council
