Nakivale Settlement Sports Program |
The Nakivale Refugee Settlement program for Peace and Sports is aiming to foster a culture of sustainable peace and development. This project is the driving force in equipping community members with the necessary skills and opportunities to become catalysts for positive change in their communities, promoting sustainable development. The proposed project “Sports for Peace and Positive Change” utilizes the transformative power of sports to promote peace, social cohesion, and sustainable development within Nakivale Refugee Settlement. This initiative, spearheaded by Action for Peace and Nonviolence – APN, led by Gervin Baila Kitwika as its director, an ICP primary liaison for Kashojwa B Community City of Peace, fosters collaboration, empowers marginalized groups and builds resilient communities by integrating sports into broader development goals.
Throughout this project, we involve five (5) different youth football teams with varying ages of 12 years to 18 years old, with a number of 100 to 150 youths engaged in the project and looking forward to expanding our reach with an increasing number of youth football players getting interested in the project. Besides the youths, this project also involves community members from different backgrounds, including community and local leaders in different peacebuilding workshops.

Nakivale Refugee Settlement houses thousands of refugees from various regions, fostering a mosaic of cultures and backgrounds. While this diversity represents a wealth of potential, it can also lead to misunderstandings, social tensions and challenges in community cohesion. The settlement faces numerous challenges, including limited access to education, inadequate infrastructure and the lingering impacts of trauma from conflicts. Sports present a unique opportunity to bridge cultural divides, foster dialogue and instill values of teamwork and cooperation. They are also a catalyst for sustainable development, providing pathways for education, youth engagement, physical and mental well-being, and social inclusion. As such, this project will integrate sports into peace-building and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. |
