Fighting against gender-based violence (GBV) on Idjwi Island requires a multi-level approach: prevention, protection, support, and sustainable change in mentalities. Here is a structured response:- Preventing upstreamEducation on equality from a young age (in schools, families, communities of Idjwi).Raising awareness through media campaigns, social networks, community theater, public debates.Training of community leaders, religious figures, teachers, law enforcement on gender issues and human rights.Economic empowerment of women to reduce their financial dependence (microcredit, vocational training, access to employment).- Creating spaces for children’s play to expand and promote stress relief among children.- Protecting victimsHotlines and safe shelters to host and support victims.Adapted police and judicial procedures (specialized units, rapid investigations).

Free or accessible psychological and medical support. Protection orders to distance the aggressor. – Pursue and penalize Strict enforcement of existing laws against domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of gender-based violence (GBV). Reform discriminatory legal texts if necessary. Train magistrates, police officers, and lawyers to avoid re-victimization. Fight against impunity through swift and fair procedures. – Change mindsets in the long term Promote positive models of masculinity and mutual respect. Encourage the participation of men and boys in the fight against GBV. Challenge stereotypes and social norms that justify or minimize violence. Use art, culture, and media to transform perceptions. Coordinate actions Create a network of actors: NGOs, instituEnsure sustainable funding for programs to combat gender-based violence (GBV). Note: In summary: It is not enough to simply punish the violence that has already occurred. We must address the root causes, protect victims, educate the entire society, and ensure that the law is applied fairly and swiftly.
