Duxbury
Duxbury Rotary Club, ID 6653, District 7950
The area now known as Duxbury was inhabited by people as early as 12,000 to 9,000 BCE. By the time European settlers arrived here, the region was inhabited by the Wampanoags, who called this place Mattakeesett, meaning "place of many fish." Duxbury is located about 35 miles south of Boston, population 16K. Duxbury has many thriving community organizations that cooperate and coordinate with each other to provide deeply engaging events and services. Duxbury is committed to a strong public education system.
Our club was founded in 1950 and has been an important part of the Duxbury community ever since, providing opportunities to serve others and to raise money for important causes. Duxbury Rotary was a key supporter of Club President Razia Jan when she founded her school for girls in Afghanistan in 2007. Razia’s Ray of Hope Foundation provides education and support to Afghan girls addressing a critical need in the region. Our support for this foundation is strong and ongoing. Every year we coordinate and host fundraising events like Team Trivia Night and the Bluefish River Duck Race. These events raise money for Duxbury High School scholarships and for our Good Neighbor Fund. The Good Neighbor Fund provides financial assistance to community members experiencing hardship and works to connect them with organizations providing long term solutions for housing and food stability. Duxbury Rotary Peacebuilding Mission & Vision The Peacebuilding Committee anticipates working closely with Duxbury for All as many aspects of our mission and vision are closely aligned. Mission We envision a community that unequivocally accepts the rights of others, engages in respectful debate and advocacy, and trusts in the free flow of accurate and honest information from our community leaders. We anticipate this will result in greater citizen engagement and a sense of investment in the outcomes. Increasing engagement and trust will result in policies and services that benefit the greatest number of citizens. Vision We strive to make our community a beacon of Positive Peace, where every individual feels respected, supported, and empowered to create meaningful change. We do this by: • Hosting programs and events that educate the public about the value of Positive Peace. • Bringing people, organizations, and local government together to work as partners, to implement policies and programs that effect change and support basic human rights for all. Engaging our students in understanding Positive Peace. • Creating places in town for community members to contemplate Peace (Peace Poles, open spaces) We address issues with openness, curiosity, and respect in order to foster a true sense of belonging and encourage others to do the same.
Duxbury Peacebuilding Committee Goals 1. One event/year highlighting Peace projects (see flyer for Ray Matsumiya event) 2. Engage community organizations to plan a Peacebuilding event for the week of Sept 21 and establish a calendar 3. Install 1-2 additional Peace Poles fabricated by our high school woodworking department 4. Continue to add to our Peace flag and eventually display it in a prominent place in town (at each event we provide squares of fabric on which people write “what Peace means to me”)
