445th International City of Peace

Kitshanga, North Kivu, D.R. Congo

Caught between Poverty and Guns

A deadly ratio. The U.S., China, France, South Africa, Ukraine, and Egypt have sent 1 million guns into D.R. Congo, where the average living wage is $2.16 per day. 85,000 people have fled since October 1st, 2024 (source: Politico)

The war is “characterized by widespread human rights abuses, including the conscription of child soldiers, sexual violence against women and girls…” Now come the villagers of Kitshanga in North Kivu, D.R. Congo led by new ICP Liaison Laetitia Ndayishimiye, who writes of her practical and hopeful vision for community: “Rehabilitate the city by building modern infrastructure for stability and prosperity.” As the 445th International City of Peace, Laetitia will gain services, and we all know we must do more. We are with the Laetitia’s of the world, especially the courageous women of Kitshanga. Do more!
