Tacoma is a vibrant city situated on the Puget Sound and is home to about 225,000 Tacomans. We are a diverse population representing many different races and ethnicities and is home to the Puyallup tribe among other Native American peoples. We have beautiful natural and historic landmarks including the Washington State History Museum, the Chihuly Glass Museum, and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. We are situated in Western Washington and boast amazing vistas of Mount Rainier National Park and the Olympic Mountains. We are a port city in conjunction with the port of Seattle in the Pacific Northwest connecting to other West Coast ports as well as stretching across the Pacific to international ports. Known as the ‘City of Destiny,’ Tacoma lives up to its name through the spirit of its citizens—people who shape their own futures with resilience, hope, and a deep pride in calling this community home.
Tacoma, the City of Destiny, is called to shape a future of peace, justice, and community well-being. Our vision is a city where every resident feels safe, respected, and empowered, and where diversity, creativity, and civic pride sustain a flourishing community. As an International City of Peace, Tacoma will embody the truth that peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of justice, compassion, and opportunity. Our mission is to cultivate peace through partnerships, youth empowerment, and inclusive collaboration by: building trust and safe public spaces; engaging schools in peace-centered learning; celebrating cultural diversity and dismantling barriers; collaborating with nonprofits, businesses, and neighborhoods; and advancing equity through housing, healthcare, opportunity, and environmental stewardship. Guided by principles of community, justice, diversity, education, and sustainability, Tacoma can inspire its citizens—and the world—as a true City of Peace.
Civic Harmony & Safety: Build trust among residents and leaders, expand restorative justice, and ensure safe, welcoming neighborhoods and schools. Youth & Education: Integrate peace-centered learning, create youth leadership opportunities, and celebrate student contributions. Diversity & Inclusion: Highlight Tacoma’s multicultural heritage, foster intercultural dialogue, and remove systemic barriers to participation. Community Partnerships: Collaborate with nonprofits, schools, businesses, and faith groups, support neighborhood-led projects, and connect with global peace networks. Economic & Environmental Justice: Expand housing, healthcare, and economic opportunity, strengthen food security and family stability, and protect natural resources through sustainable development.

Annie Wright Schools, City of Tacoma (through the Mayor's Youth Commission office)
I have resided in Tacoma for the last 13 years and I'm proud to call Tacoma my home. I am a Korean-American Spanish teacher at Annie Wright Schools and served as a founding member of the faculty of the Upper Schools for Boys at Annie Wright Schools which began in 2017. I speak 3 languages. I have 4 grown and almost grown up kids who graduated from schools located in Tacoma; Annie Wright Schools and Charles Wright Academy. I was born in Seoul, South Korea but as many of us in Tacoma can claim, we are here by choice and hope to contribute meaningfully to building Tacoma as a city of peace.
Yes, I approve the guidelines for an International City of Peace and will provide four or more additional approved signatures of community Peace Team members (see next registration field). "A culture of peace is a set of values, attitudes, traditions and modes of behavior and ways of life based on respect for life, ending of violence and promotion and practice of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation. Tenets include: Full respect for and promotion of all human rights and fundamental freedoms; Commitment to peaceful settlement of conflicts; Efforts to meet the developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations; Respect for and promotion of the right to development; Respect for and promotion of equal rights and opportunities for women and men; Respect for and promotion of the right of everyone to freedom of expression, opinion and information; Adherence to the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations; and fostered by an enabling national and international environment conducive to peace." In addition, the Golden Rule - "Do for others as you would have them do for you" -- provides a unity proposition for personal, local and global peace.
