Tanke is a community located in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, Nigeria. It is situated in the Ilorin South Local Government Area and is primarily known as a residential area along University Road. Tanke is a vibrant area, particularly known for its high population of students from the University of Ilorin. The presence of the University of Ilorin significantly influences the community's character and demographics. Tanke has a bustling commercial sector, including shops, markets, and businesses catering to the student population and residents. While closely associated with the university, Tanke also has its own distinct history and was formerly made up of several smaller communities. Tanke has evolved into a dynamic area, blending traditional elements with modern development.
To make Tanke Community a recognized City of Peace where peaceful co-existence, cultural harmony, and mutual respect are celebrated as foundations for sustainable development. A community where every resident, regardless of ethnic or religious background is empowered to contribute meaningfully to social, economic, and spiritual progress.
Tanke Community aims to promote peaceful co-existence, cultural unity, and inclusive development among its diverse residents. The community seeks to become a model City of Peace by fostering dialogue, mutual respect, and shared leadership. Yes, I approve the guidelines for an International City of Peace and will provide four or more additional approved signatures of community Peace Team members (see next registration field). "A culture of peace is a set of values, attitudes, traditions and modes of behavior and ways of life based on respect for life, ending of violence and promotion and practice of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation. Tenets include: Full respect for and promotion of all human rights and fundamental freedoms; Commitment to peaceful settlement of conflicts; Efforts to meet the developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations; Respect for and promotion of the right to development; Respect for and promotion of equal rights and opportunities for women and men; Respect for and promotion of the right of everyone to freedom of expression, opinion and information; Adherence to the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations; and fostered by an enabling national and international environment conducive to peace." In addition, the Golden Rule - "Do for others as you would have them do for you" -- provides a unity proposition for personal, local and global peace.
