Peacemaking in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement
WHAT IS IT LIKE to be a refugee in Uganda? Overcrowding, hunger, lack of education, sexual violence, evidence of inhumanity. Yet the refugees strive! “As a resident committed to promoting peace, social cohesion, and harmonious living within our community,” writes Odette Kabomboro Obaha, the new Liaison for Kityaza village, the 476th International City of Peace initiative, “I am particularly motivated by the values and actions your organization implements in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement Uganda. Your commitment to unity, intercultural dialogue, and peacebuilding is a source of inspiration for me. Through my membership, I hope to actively contribute to community initiatives, particularly in the areas of peace awareness, cultural and social activities, and strengthening solidarity among the different communities. I am confident that my commitment, motivation, and desire to serve the community will be valuable assets in supporting your work and helping us achieve our goals.” We are with this mother and her children. We help, but wish we could do more.
