Youth Action for Peace and Nonviolence is a community based organization based in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Isingiro District, Western Region, in the Republic of Uganda which was created in 2022 by Gervin Baila Kitwika in response to the dire plight of the youth in Isingiro District, Western Region in particular, who are struggling to achieve better life standards due to conflicts erupting in their communities. The founder of the Youth Action for Peace and Nonviolence and the youth themselves deemed it necessary to assist in giving holistic support with the mission to improve their living conditions by being champions of peace. The organization is established for the purpose of helping the youth, guiding and mentoring them in making positive living attractive.
We envision a community where every young person is equipped with the knowledge, skills and resources to be an active agent of peace, nonviolence and community change. Our organization strives to be a driving force in nurturing a generation of young leaders who are passionate about creating a peaceful and inclusive community for all. Our mission is to provide a supportive and empowering environment where the youth can develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to become ambassadors for peace, bridging divides and promoting understanding among diverse communities. We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity, empathy and collaboration, in which young people are equipped to address the root causes of conflict, advocate for social justice and contribute meaningfully to the well-being of their communities.
Our goals and goals are to provide leadership training and mentorship programs for young people, to promote conflict resolution and mediation skills among young people, to foster a culture of nonviolence and tolerance among young people, to offer educational and skill building workshops to enhance youth capabilities, to create platforms for dialogue and understanding across diverse youth groups, to organize community service projects led by young people to promote peace and unity, to advocate for policies and programs that support youth empowerment and peace building efforts, to establish youth-led initiatives for community development and improvement, to establish sports and recreational programs to promote teamwork and cooperation among young people, to establish a network of peace ambassadors who promote conflict resolution and harmony within their communities, to promote interfaith and intercultural dialogue among youth to foster religious and cultural harmony

My name is Gervin Baila Kitwika, a Congolese refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo who has been living in Uganda for 10 years. I'm a secondary school graduate with a diploma in "social techniques" provided by the Congolese ministry of education. I'm the founder and chairperson of Youth Action for Peace and Nonviolence, a youth-led initiative based in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, which is all about peace building, prevention and promotion through different community activities, and I'm also a nonviolent communication and conflict mediation trainer.
Yes, I approve the guidelines for an International City of Peace and will provide four or more additional approved signatures of community Peace Team members (see next registration field). "A culture of peace is a set of values, attitudes, traditions and modes of behavior and ways of life based on respect for life, ending of violence and promotion and practice of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation. Tenets include: Full respect for and promotion of all human rights and fundamental freedoms; Commitment to peaceful settlement of conflicts; Efforts to meet the developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations; Respect for and promotion of the right to development; Respect for and promotion of equal rights and opportunities for women and men; Respect for and promotion of the right of everyone to freedom of expression, opinion and information; Adherence to the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations; and fostered by an enabling national and international environment conducive to peace." In addition, the Golden Rule - "Do for others as you would have them do for you" -- provides a unity proposition for personal, local and global peace.
