The land that ultimately became Webster Groves was purchased as land grant from the Spanish by Frenchman, Gregorie Sarpay. The city of Webster Groves was incorporated 129 years ago in 1896, becoming one of the oldest suburbs of the City of St. Louis, MO., and makes up part of the "Inner Ring" of suburbs of St. Louis. It is landlocked at 6.1 square miles and its population has remaining relatively stable at 24,000 since 1950. Webster Groves is best known for the quality & character of its people, its historic grand single-family homes, beautiful neighborhoods and trees, and its small town charm and identity. Our high-performance public district is a primary reason new young families move to Webster. Webster sports more churches per square mile than any of the other 88 municipalities in St. Louis County. Webster is often called the modern day Mayberry USA. But Webster is best known for its long standing foundation in the arts. And in Webster, the arts are the path to peace, as there is no other force in the world with the power and beauty of the arts to lift up people's spirits and unite and bring people together as one community of love, joy, hope and peace. Webster is the unofficial "City of the Arts!"
Our vision is to preserve and protect our proud traditions and equities that define us, yet add value through new progressive & creative innovations.; to retain our small town charm and character but advance our city creatively through our love and excellence in the arts. In that regard, to be a smART City!!!
Webster Groves has plenty of hard goals and objectives, especially in delivering rational excellence in city services, etc. But the real power and strength of Webster lies emotionally in the character of its people, with mutual, respect, dignity, high self-esteem and happiness through our many human relationships, connections and friendships.
I am just an ordinary everyday resident of Webster Groves for the past 25 years. The major contribution of my little independent group of resident allies is putting on 8 unique community events every year.
