The Legacy of Peace in Nanjing, China
HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE. China now has three International Cities of Peace. Nanjing was the first in 2017. This historic City of over 8 million people has embraced the ideal of a Culture of Peace based on the platform provided by the association of International Cities of Peace. Professor Liu Cheng narrates this video which is an extraordinary ray of hope for the world. As the UNESCO Chair of Peace Studies, Professor Liu has been instrumental in developing peace curriculum in China.

Nanjing, the City of Peace

Nanjing is a capital of love and peace.
More than 600 years ago,
the seafarer Zheng He set out from Nanjing,
guiding his fleet
on seven voyages to the West.
Wherever the expedition passed,
conflicts and disputes were resolved,
goods were exchanged with the numerous lands they reached,
and trade prospered.
It truly was a historical journey of peace.
In more recent times,
Dr. Sun Zhongshan’s handwriting of “universal love,”
was inscribed into the stone of the Zhongshan Mausoleum Pagoda,
passing on the spirit of peace in the city of Nanjing.
Nanjing has, in its history,
endured many wars and atrocities.
The suffering of war has left inerasable traumatic memories,
allowing the people to appreciate the value of peace.
Peace and development are the themes of the day,
they are also the greatest challenges of our times.
The Nanjing of today,
has accepted the responsibility of peace,
has put into action peace,
has devoted itself in positive peace,
has becomed an International City of Peace.
The notion of “City of Peace,”
tough it can be traced back thousands of years,
was realized after the Second World War,
has spread across the globe in the past two decades.
Currently there are 340 International Cities of Peace.
The ideal of “Cities of Peace” is peaceful development,
building on cities tradition of peace,
uniting governance, schools, communities and citizens,
through peace education and peace studies,
advocating peace in various forms.
Promoting the development of the city,
Achieving the advance peace through urban development.
In 2017 Nanjing was named the 169th in the world,
and the first “International City of Peace” in China.
Cities of peace include every person,
together we promote the peace in the country,
the peace between countries.
This is the key to world peace.
The concept of the City of Peace is an expression of the Chinese people’s
long tradition of love for peace.
It is also a beautiful incarnation of a city’s development goals.
Cities of peace are watchful eyes in times of calamity,
a prime example the 2020 Global Pandemic.
The Chair on Peace Studies, together with the Association of International of Cities of Peace,
at once provided humanitarian assistance to 33 African Cities of Peace,

Peace Cities are a united platform for building peace.
The Nanjing Peace Forum launched in 2020,
bringing together representatives from the United Nations and other international organizations,
peace experts and scholars,
and youth from various backgrounds and countries,
gathered in Nanjing to jointly discuss the key aspects of peace building.
Promotion of exchange and mutual understanding of a Culture of Peace
providing guidance and vision for global peacebuilding,
carrying China’s voice for peace to the world.
Peace is the passion and pursuit of Nanjing.
In 2000 Nanjing started popularizing peace education.
In 2017 Nanjing University was officially awarded the
UNESCO Chair on Peace Studies,
the sole Chair on Peace Studies in China.
With the Chair on Peace Studies,
Nanjing is taking the lead in developing a peace education curriculum covering all school levels,
a peace studies curriculum with Chinese characteristics,
introducing peace studies into the classroom
kindling the spirit of peace in young individuals,
enabling the young generation to grow into a positive force for global understanding,
Promoting a Culture of Peace.
Peace and cooperation are the common aspirations of humankind,
upholding dialogue and consensus,
creating a world of lasting peace,
is an essential aspecty and a profound aspiration for building a common destiny for humankind.
Peace is a ray of sunlight.
Peace is a rainbow.
It is the universal wish of the people of the world.
Nanjing uses the promise of peace to heal the wounds of war,
practicing peace to promote harmonious development
