Establish Your Community as a City of Peace

Is your community already a City of Peace? Check the Cities Listing or use the search tool for your city, town, village, neighborhood, or other municipality. Even if your larger City is a city of peace, you can work in a smaller community and reap the benefits of building the peace. To begin the process, download our “Letter of Intent” and the  “Becoming a City of Peace” presentation. Then send an email with a little about yourself and your community.

SAMPLE PROCLAMATION (PDF download)

In order to foster unity for a true city of peace, all stakeholders of society should be engaged: including Wellness, Academic, Security, Commerce, Arts, Recreation, Service, Faith-Based, Environmental, and Civic sectors, all of which contribute to a peaceful community. You can start with a grassroots peacebuilding team or through an official Proclamation. To further a deep culture of peace eventually requires a strong and unified collaboration between grassroots organizations and the civic leadership that can bring resources to the effort.

The process for creating a city of peace is more than signatures on paper. It entails creating a volunteer team that works for the safety, prosperity, and quality of life for all in the community. It is a transformation of community and an inspiration for generations to come. The process of establishing your city, town, village, or other municipal area will be life-affirming for you personally, your community, and the wider world.

To create an initiative is very simple and costs no money. You can emphasize the work you are currently doing, or create a new organization for community peace building. Each community has a legacy of peace that can be highlighted, especially in terms of giving hope and encouragement to children and adults alike. International Cities of Peace is not a funding organization but after one year of active engagement in the community you can receive a letter of Recommendation for your community Action Plan. In addition, individual cities of peace have the option of a mutual support program with other cities through our City-to-City Collaboration Program™ (see website).

Five Steps to Create a Transformational City of Peace!

The first step is the Letter of Intent, which identifies the city, town, village or community as well as the state/province and country. It must be a community where you live and/or work. One person, perhaps you, will be included as the Liaison between your community and the Association of International Cities of Peace. You will be added to our Global Leadership Council.

Once we receive the following five items, we will create a free unique web page for your community initiative. Once approved by you, we will make the announcement to our members and media around the world. If you have questions on these items, please ask:

1. Letter of Intent for multiple signatures (print, get signatures, and scan to return)
2. A vision, mission, and goals statement (as detailed as possible)
3. Photos and captions of local events, locations, or historical events (law requires only photos you shoot or are able to release ownership to ICP — none pulled from the Internet)
4. A photo and background or you as the Liaison of the group (please send a short biography); also include a contact email to use on the web page.
5. A statement about the historical and current peace legacy and challenges of your community

Each city is unique. The UNESCO Culture of Peace resolution and tenets are included only as a guideline. You can create your own Letter or use our Letter of Intent. The more people who sign the Letter of Intent the better in order to get your peace team or committee off the ground. Their emails are not distributed or sold but only used for newsletter distribution.
